Dr Tasmin Sommerfield
Dr Tasmin Sommerfield is the Scottish Director of Screening and leads Screening Oversight and Assurance Scotland (SOAS) within Public Services Delivery Scotland. As well as providing strategic leadership and oversight of all of Scotland's national screening programmes, she is currently leading the phased implementation of Targeted Lung Cancer Screening in Scotland and is therefore working closely with clinical, programme management, public health, policy, operational and digital colleagues across Scotland, as well as with Lung cancer screening experts from across the wider UK to achieve this.
Tasmin graduated in Medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1997. Following clinical experience in acute medicine and medical microbiology, she undertook specialist training in public health, during which she completed an MSc in Public Health at the University of Edinburgh. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCPE) and a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health (FFPH).
In 2010, Tasmin was appointed Consultant in Public Health Medicine in NHS Lanarkshire, where she spent ten years leading and developing several population screening programmes and contributing to the optimisation of cancer services. She joined NHS National Services Scotland in 2020 in a national screening role and was appointed Scottish Director of Screening in April 2026, having previously served as Deputy Director.
As Scotland moves towards the introduction of Targeted Lung Cancer Screening, Tasmin is passionate about ensuring that the programme is both effective and equitable, with a particular focus on building the programme around the needs of underserved populations who stand to benefit most. She is committed to delivering a programme that achieves the highest standards of quality, safety and sustainability, whilst working with wider NHS Scotland colleagues to ensure that downstream diagnostic and treatment services are appropriately prepared and resourced to support an optimised end-to-end patient pathway.
