Lung cancer screening subject of parliamentary debate
The UKLCC is proud to have helped Clive Jones, Liberal Democrat MP for Wokingham, secure a parliamentary debate on lung cancer screening, which was held today (25th June).
In his motion, Clive Jones said: "Screening is without doubt the single biggest intervention in improving lung cancer survival. When the UK Lung Cancer Coalition was launched in 2005, five-year survival stood at around 8%, among the lowest rates in Europe. The UKLCC has now set an ambition of 35% of patients surviving five years after diagnosis by 2035. A target once thought to be impossible but now within reach thanks to screening."
We need to maintain the momentum on lung cancer screening and ensure the programme is implemented UK-wide, not just in England. To date, the NHS England targeted lung cancer screening programme has diagnosed 10,600 people with the disease, over 75% at Stage 1 and 2. Screening saves lives!
