Dr David Dorward
Consultant Pathologist
Dr David Dorward is the Lead Consultant Thoracic Pathologist at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. His clinical practice centres on the diagnosis and molecular characterisation of pulmonary malignancies, with a focus on multi-disciplinary engagement to optimise tissue acquisition and use in tumour phenotyping.
His research explores the mechanisms of pulmonary inflammatory responses and the tumour microenvironment. This work has investigated the role of innate immune cells in lung injury, COVID-19 and non-small cell lung cancer.
He currently serves as the Digital Pathology Lead for both NHS Lothian and the Scottish Pathology Network (SPAN). In these roles, he focuses on the practical integration of digital reporting and artificial intelligence into clinical workflows, specifically developing tools to streamline biomarker scoring and molecular testing in lung cancer.
