More than 10,000 lung cancers diagnosed

The UK Lung Cancer Coalition (UKLCC) welcomes the latest NHS England figures showing that targeted lung cancer screening has now identified over 10,600 lung cancers, with more than three-quarters detected at an early and more treatable stage. This is a significant achievement for lung cancer outcomes in England and demonstrates the value of taking targeted screening directly into communities where need is greatest.

These results reinforce the evidence base the UKLCC has consistently highlighted and campaigned for: lung cancer screening saves lives, and accessible, local delivery is essential to reaching those at highest risk. The programme’s focus on areas with the greatest burden of lung cancer has been particularly important in reducing inequalities, with many individuals receiving a diagnosis at stage 1 or 2 who might otherwise have presented much later.

As the National Cancer Plan commits to full rollout of targeted lung cancer screening by 2030, this milestone underlines the importance of sustained investment, workforce planning and diagnostic capacity to ensure timely follow up and treatment. Screening must be delivered consistently across all four nations - and supported by robust pathways in imaging, pathology, and genomics, so that early detection translates into improved survival for every patient.

The UKLCC will continue to work with clinicians, patient groups and policymakers to ensure that this momentum is maintained. With millions more people expected to be invited for a lung health check in England, the opportunity to transform lung cancer outcomes is substantial.
