UKLCC to attend national lung cancer nursing conference
The UK Lung Cancer Coalition is delighted to be attending, and exhibiting, at the Lung Cancer Nursing UK Conference again this year (18–19 June, Glasgow).
Lung cancer nurse specialists (LCNSs) are the backbone of high quality, patient centred lung cancer care. They provide emotional, practical, and clinical support to patients and their families at every stage of the pathway. Data shows that patients supported by a CNS within a well functioning MDT are more likely to experience better care and improved outcomes. Reflecting this, the National Lung Cancer Audit sets a clear expectation that 90% of patients should have contact with a lung cancer nurse specialist around the time of diagnosis.
LCNSs are also a vital asset in improving health equity. They are often more accessible than consultants, spend more time with patients, and ask the inquiring, insightful questions that may uncover any concerns and unmet physical, financial, or mental wellbeing needs that might otherwise go unspoken. Their ability to build trust and continuity makes them a powerful force for reducing variation and ensuring that every patient — regardless of background — receives the care and support they deserve.
Yet despite their impact, there is a national shortage of CNSs, and their roles too often lack recognition and protection. In our recent submissions to Government consultations, we have insisted that the Government and NHS must safeguard this vital workforce if we are to deliver the ambitions set out in National Cancer Plan and 10 Year Plan.
This is why the UKLCC has steadfastly campaigned for every patient to have access to an LCNS, wherever they live. As we continue to push for earlier diagnosis, improved genomic turnaround times, faster pathways, and follow-up for lung cancer survivors - a topic that our Clinical Lead, Professor Robert Rintoul, will be discussing on day two of the conference - the insight and leadership of LCNS colleagues remains indispensable.
This week, we look forward to connecting with nurse specialists from across the UK, listening to their experiences, and sharing information on our past and current projects.
If you’re attending, please do come and visit us at our stand.
